FELTING A VESSEL OR BAG
When: JUNE 11 10.30 – 3.30pm Cost: $95.00 Where: DCH Tutor: CONNIE WHEELER Learn the ancient craft of wet felting. A timeless method of creating a textile by combining wool roving, soap, water and friction i.e. “elbow grease”. Be your own designer and create your own beautiful textile art pieces. A truly tactile and fun experience. Use all those wonderful fabric and thread scraps from your treasure stash to incorporate in your design.
In the first workshop you will make a small scarf and lean all the basics of Felting. In the second one you will learn further techniques to make seamless pieces of felt. Please note these are stand alone classes.
MACHINE EMBROIDERY
MAKE A JOURNAL COVER
When: July 30 Tutor: CONNIE WHEELER Venue: Old Shire Offices Dromana 10.30 – 3.30pm Cost: $95.00
Many of you will recall the beautiful journal covers we had in the shop last year that Connie makes and sells. In this class you will learn the basics of making the template for your cover so it fits nicely, learn a number of machine embroidery basics and how to pull it all together. Don’t worry if you don’t use Journals, this technique can be used for any type of book eg diary, photo albums etc
BASKET WEAVING
When: JUNE 4 10.00 – 4.00pm Tutor: JILL TAYLOR. Where: DCH Cost: $95.00 This ancient craft utilizes nature’s resources (often otherwise destined for the compost heap). In these eco-friendly classes you will learn what leaves, vines and grasses to harvest, how to prepare them and what traditional techniques to use. You will incorporate fibres and thread into your work and take home your own beautiful and functional basket. The class will also look at the principles and ethics of permaculture. USING INKTENSE PENCILS IN QUILTING AND MACHINE EMBROIDERY
When: June 18 10.30 – 4.00pm Tutor: LEE VAUSE Where: DCH Cost: $95.00 We all love our Derwent Inktense pencils, now you can learn how to use them in your quilting and textile art. You may have seen them in some of the textile magazines. They are a water soluble colour pencil that looks much more like ink in its intensity. Inktense are really beautiful and vibrant and work just as well on fabric when used with medium. Lee is a Master Quilter who has incorporated them into her work with fabulous results. She is now happy to teach you how to use them too. I have attached a photo for you and will post more on the web. This is a technique based class so you will make a sample or ‘mini quilt’.
MAKE A SCARF USING WATER SOLUBLE FILM & YARN
When: JUNE 25 10.30 – 4.00pm Tutor: TINA WHITELY Cost: $95.00 Where: DCH
See the beautiful pictures of Tina’s work attached. The scarf (or fabric) created using this technique is truly exquisite. In the workshop you will make a small sample (to ensure you follow the process to completion) as well as getting your scarf well under way. You will need both Vilene and aquabond for this process (aquabond is a water soluble with an adhesive side which makes layout much easier). The product is not readily available so we will provide it for the workshop and will advise as soon as possible of the materials cost.
DESIGNING FABRIC:PRINTING ON SILK
When: JULY 2 10.00 – 4.00pm Tutor: CATHERINE O’LEARY Cost: $170.00 Where: Main Ridge
(A stand alone class, or as the first step in creating fabric for a garment class in October) In this workshop Catherine explores the creation of original techniques in fabric design. Mono printing, stenciling, block printing, drawing and painting on sheer fabric will be explored. The aim of this workshop is to design fabric which can be nuno felted. Composition and transparent layering of fabric will be discussed.
Catherine O’Leary is a wonderful and very experienced Textile Artist who has taught and exhibited in Australia and overseas. Her work has been included in felt making books and publications and she has successfully sold her felt clothing locally and internationally. Her beautiful use of colour will astound you. JEWELLERY WITH FABRIC & THREAD
When: JULY 16 10.00 – 4.00pm Tutor: MARILYN TOWNSEND Cost: $ 120.00
Marilyn is an Artist and author, who has exhibited widely and is well known for her lovely, patient teaching style. She will teach you a range of techniques to make funky, arty jewellery from fabric, threads and other interesting bits and pieces. I recently saw some beautiful necklaces of this nature in an expensive shop in Mt Eliza, now you can make them for a fraction of the cost.
FELTING A PAIR OF SLIPPERS OR BOOTS
When: AUGUST 13 & 14 10.00 – 4.00pmTutor: PHYLLIS HOFFMAN Cost: $260.00
Where: Main Ridge
Day one: Learn how to measure your feet and make a Pattern for the slippers/boots. Adjust the pattern for shrinkage with felting and make a template. Start to lay the fibres.
Day two: Wet felt the fibres, full them and shrink the slippers/boots until they fit the wearer’s feet. Shape and decorate them.
WALL HANGING/ART QUILT

PAINTING WITH FIBRE & FABRIC
When: AUGUST 27 & 28 10.00 – 4.00 Cost: $295.00 Where: Main Ridge
CREATE A GARMENT THAT SUITS YOUR BODY SHAPE. Tutor: CATHERINE O LEARY
($150.00 for the workshop on July 2 if doing this workshop as well) This is a felt making workshop which focuses on all the possibilities of surface design. We will explore the manipulation of texture, colour and composition using the techniques of felting through woven fabrics. Learn how to use your printed pieces from the workshop before along with wool/fabric pre felts. The focus this workshop is to create a piece of clothing that drapes beautifully and on which the surface decorations are intricately worked using the pre felted layers of fabric. Create a design that is a unique expression of each artist.
USING RESISTS
When: OCTOBER 22 & 23 10.00 – 4.00pm Tutor: PHYLLIS HOFFMAN Cost: $140.00 1 Day workshop 2 Day workshop $260.00
Day 1: TECHNIQUES AND SAMPLES: Working with a variety of Resists: Learn how to use resists for pockets, flaps and other design details. Students can make an item of their own choice or a series of samples to refer to later.
Day 2: CREATING A PIECE USING SAMPLES Hats: Learn how to design a template for a hat. How to design and lay the wool and then how to block it into shape and add the finishing touches and decoration
