A ‘pilot’  graffiti management strategy currently being auspiced by Mornington Peninsula Shire titled the ‘Big Back Yard Project’  done in partnership with the The Department of Justice and Communities that Care (CTC) staff and students of Somerville Secondary College and Seaford artist Tony Sowersby has begun.

The project came about when the school’s internal fences were ‘tagged’ and students in a leadership program identified the need to improve the look and feel of the school grounds.  Tagging has been a severe problem for the community of Somerville and it was expressed by the leadership students that their school fences would be a good place to reconnect students with their community.  In conjunction a VCAL and community wetlands project is being developed and the mural project will create a gateway or entry to  the wetlands revitalisation project.

I visited the school today to see how the project was progressing and to my delight is coming along quite quite quickly.  The leading teacher at Somerville Catherine May said students have been very enthusiastic for the opportunity to see how an artist approaches this type of work and knowing their contribution to improving the school’s landscape has inspired a huge commitment across the whole school.  Not only are students happy to be freed up from their usual curriculum, they are truly inspired and fully engaged in the project.  Due to the school being situated on an important Aboriginal meeting place the overall themes of the artwork are the landscape pre-European settlement and include, kangaroos, bandicoots, magpies, ibis, snake, frogs and native flora.   It’s looking so beautiful!

All students from Years 7 to VCE/VCAL are participating in this exciting new initiative to build stronger connections, by making a difference and being of value to their community.  I shall keep updating the artsonthepeninsula blog with news of the project.   Go Somerville Secondary College!

Craft’s wild trio of exhibitions launching in June explores the domestic, in all its glory.

Melbourne duo ffiXXed’s image-based sculptural forms investigate popular lifestyle products and their representation within contemporary culture. Drawing from an accumulation of excess materials and imagery produced as part of their various creative processes, ffiXXed have produced new spatial and aesthetic possibilities.

 GALLERY TWO: Beck Wheeler Domesticated Deities

This new body of work sees New Zealand/Australian artist Beck Wheeler explore the historical relationship between the human and the animal, and looks at the aesthetic of objects made by man/woman during the worship and the consumption of animals.

 GALLERY THREE:  Why I eyes ya’ Tai Snaith & Lucy James

 Why I eyes ya’ is the brainchild of collaborating artists Tai Snaith and Lucy James. Their works on paper, collaged from cat books and magazines create a new breed of feline, from the ridiculously cute… to plain ridiculous. A line of merchandise, titled Cat Shit, by the artists, will launch in conjunction with the exhibition.
