MORE FROM THE YARNBOMBERS

This young lad learnt how to attach a crochet flower to the yarn covered pole in Wells Street Frankston a few weeks ago.

Jade and her band of dissenting knitters have recently yarnbombed the entrances to Frankston Council Offices, to check out what’s happening press on the following link.

http://knitaholics1.wordpress.com/2012/01/22/yarn-bombing-our-council-office/

Jade Saxelby has been running workshops teaching people crochet and knitting and to enlist knitters in her street activities.  She will be coming down to Hastings in the coming months and I believe she has already ‘bombed’ Hastings Library, if you want to know more contact arts@mornpen.vic.gov.au

STUNNING NEW WORK IN CRAFT VICTORIA’S FIRST EXHIBITIONS FOR 2012

Ceramics by Garry Bish, Photo by Jason Tavener

Our opening exhibitions for 2012 will feature significant new work by Garry Bish, Jacob Ogden Smith and Kirsten Perry.

 When:  Launch:     Thursday 19 January 2012, 6-8pm             Showing:  20 January – 3 March 2012                             Artists Talks:         Saturday 3 March 2012, 2pm

GALLERY ONE
The Vessel: A Space Oddity. Garry Bish creates a number of clay vessels featuring architectural drawings. When devices employed by painters for the creation of pictorial depth are applied to the wall of a three dimensional ceramic object an ambiguous dimension arises. The Vessel: A Space Oddity explores this strange space through a series of architectural images with enhanced perspectives.
Opening Speaker: Dr. Sophia Errey, Lecturer, School of Art, RMIT University.

GALLERY TWO                                                                                                                                                                                                       Pottery Practice Project. Jacob Ogden Smith’s archetypal pottery forms sit alongside a series of videos and found images that depict actions associated with pottery production. Smith is a Perth-based artist whose practice explores the representation of pottery within contemporary mediums such as film, television and the Internet. This body of work interrogates the ways that television co-opts and produces understandings of quality and popular entertainment.
Opening Speaker: Nella Themelios, Coordinating Curator, Craft Victoria.

GALLERY THREE                                                                                                                                                                                               Home Time. Working across a variety of media including wood and ceramics, Kirsten Perry’s new body of work will explore the emotional qualities of architectural space. Kirsten Perry is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice engages with the concept of anthropomorphism. Perry’s exhibition will feature a series of building forms imbued with human characteristics, subtly interrogating the void between emotional states and the material forms used to represent them.  Opening Speaker: Milly Flemming, Retail Manager – Projects, Craft Victoria.

Where:  Craft Victoria Gallery & Shop                                                                                                                                                               Open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm                                                                                                                                                                     31 Flinders Lane  Melbourne, Phone 03 9650 7775  http://craftvic.org.au

SUBVERSIVE KNITTERS OR WHAT?

Yarn bombing has been around for a while, the community of Warwick in Queensland have been running an annual festival event around the notion for a number of years.  Check out http://jumpersandjazz.com

We now have yarn bombing appearing across the Peninsula.  The photo I took this week is one of a number of funky additions to the street trees in Wells Street Frankston done by Jade Saxelby and others from the groups Knit-A-Holics & Yarn Corner

Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillor Reade Smith is interested in starting a movement of knitters yarn bombing Hastings to improve the look of the streets and for people to knit and have fun together.  He’s planning to purchase the wool and the needles to help Jade work with local and visiting knitters to Hastings.

I’ve also heard a whisper that Hastings Community House are doing some interesting knitting projects.

Subversive knitters – love it!

Check out the work of the Knit-A-Holics on facebook.com/knit.a.holics get in contact by email to http://knitaholics@yahoo.com.au or visit thir blogsite knitaholics1.wordpress.com

If you are keen to become involved or know more email me at arts@mornpen.vic.gov.au  and we can keep you informed of when and where the yarn bombing will begin.
